I was a weather broadcaster for many years so I’m very much aware of the sun’s strength, UV index and all of that. Saying “slather on that sunscreen” was a regular part of the weather vernacular. Even though I always wear sunscreen (albeit not enough in the winter) I have a love hate relationship with it. For two reasons. I hate the mousey, grey skin look that I get after using most sunscreens. Black and brown toned people know what I’m talking about. I’m not trying to look like a jumbie! Also I always hesitate putting sunscreen on my face for fear of having a break-out.
That’s because some sunscreens have comodogenic ingredients and the stuff they put in it to protect against UV rays, can cause sensitivity reactions.
So if you’re like me and have this dual challenge, I’ve been trying a few new products recently that I think you’re gonna love.
Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Eventone SPF 50 Suncare Stick
Has all the cocoa butter, coconut oil, shea butter goodness that we’ve always loved about Palmer’s. Plus it’s specially formulated to leave skin radiant without any white, pasty residue. Also the suncare stick is paba, paraben and phthalate free and it’s water resistant for up to 80 minutes!
Aveeno Protect+Hydrate Face & Body Sunscreen Lotion
It’s not thick, it’s fast adsorbing, oil free and non-comodegenic. Everything people who deal with acne want to hear! It also contains nourishing ACTIVE NATURALS® Oatmeal, specially designed to protect and nourish skin.
Alumier MD Sheer Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Sunscreen
I love this brand and got some great results from their regular skin care line. Was glad to hear they have a sunscreen. It’s a silky and sheer (so it blends in nicely) physical sunscreen that provides powerful broad spectrum protection. Also comes in a tinted version.
Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35, Clear daily sunscreen
So breathable and it smells magical. I find this to be a really good everyday face sunscreen. It has a clear water gel formula filled with “active micro-capsules” that instantly absorbs into skin with no greasy residue and…yay zero white cast! It’s also non-comodegenic and paraben free.
Avene Complexion Correcting Shield SPF 50+ Dark
Ok so this is a little bit different in that it’s not just a sunscreen. If you follow me on instagram you know I’ve been using this complexion corrector a lot. It combines 100-percent mineral broad spectrum sunscreen with the complexion-perfecting and hydrating properties of a tinted moisturizer. For days when I don’t want to put on a full face of makeup, it makes my morning routine so much easier! Be sure to use a sponge or just the palms of your hands…not your fingers.
Benefit Cosmetics dream screen Spf 45 invisible silky matte sunscreen
I must admit I only had a tiny sample of this. But I was impressed at how lightweight and basically invisible it was on my skin. Plus I keep hearing from other bloggers of colour how good it is. Again it’s fast absorbing and moisturizing. Plus it’s oil free. So it checks off all the boxes in terms of being a suitable sunscreen for darker acne prone skin.
Kate Somerville Uncomplikated SPF
Kate Somerville’s Eradikate is my go to for zapping pimples overnight. The makeup artists on Designated Survivor told me about it and I find it really effective. I believe in this brand in terms of acne treatment, so I’m all for this Makeup Setting Spray. I know it’s not a traditional sunscreen but it still delivers broad-spectrum sun protection. It’s ideal for setting your makeup and protects from the harmful effects of the sun, while leaving your skin soft and glowy! Loving this stuff.
So bring on the sun. I’m ready for that smooth sun-kissed glowy skin…the safe way!!
