Goosebumps. I get goosebumps when I witness something special, when something touches my heart, connects with me at a deeper level. It’s always my indicator to shut up, listen and be in the moment. Last Sunday I got major goosebumps. That’s because I took part in a photoshoot featuring black women in Canadian media. 30 beautiful, strong black women who work in front and behind the camera.
There are many more women who were not included here but I’m sure there will be opportunities for future gatherings for those who were not able to make it.
This industry, regardless of race, can be extremely isolating. Being one of a few black faces on Canadian TV comes with its own set of issues. This photoshoot was a much needed reminder that I’m not alone in the struggle. I took a moment during the shoot to look at every single face and recognize their contribution to the industry. I was awe struck and so inspired. I’m grateful for this media sisterhood.
Big thanks to Camille Dundas and Fennella Bruce for the vision and to Lawrence Kerr for capturing this important moment.
